Rather than defining an image, a portrait is about resembling the inner self, unveiling the essence of which cannot be confined by matter.
This is the premise for an exhibition that showcases the unconventional aspects of portraiture, the role that portraits play in developing different styles and methods, and the influence of her closest ones. Rather than accepting commissions for portraits, Teresa painted them as part of her ongoing experimentation as she explored pictorial languages to capture her intense perceptions of the world. She rarely paints people that she did not encounter and instead portrayed herself, her family, her friends, art-world admirers, and the inhabitants of New York and her native Spain with whom she felt a strong connection.
'I always had an impulse to portrait my immediate ones, and this action is the cornerstone of everything else that I create. People's stories drive my creativity, and they tend to evolve into something else, whether it's a sculpture, a ring, a stained glass design, or a clothing piece.
The exhibition brings together 22 paintings and drawings created between 2020 and 2021. They encompass the recent work developed in the past year in New York, place that remains as her anchor throughout this time.
I've also put together a selection of limited edition prints to share and celebrate with you the art of portraiture. Each of these prints is 11x14 in size and printed in high resolution on '300gsm entrada natural archival cotton rag paper'. Hand-signed and numbered within an edition of 20.
